Three Cheers for British Drama

August 11, 2017 at 9:00 PM

Several years ago, my interest in network television went into a downward spiral. That spiral led to the purchase of a Blu-ray disc player to increase my viewing options. I began to search for series available on DVD and the ones I selected were mostly British dramas. I don't remember how I discovered some of them, but most were recommended by co-workers and library patrons. New Tricks was mentioned by friends from Ohio. When I discovered there were twelve seasons of New Tricks, I was thrilled as the series provided entertainment for at least six months, at the rate of five or six episodes a week. I am currently watching Ballykissangel which is set in Ireland, and Monarch of the Glen which is filmed in Scotland. Some other series which I have enjoyed are: Wish Me LuckHouse of Eliott, the British version of House of CardsThe Brokenwood MysteriesBroadchurchThe Last Detective, and Last Tango in HalifaxHappy Valley is recommended to fans of Grantchester, if you would care to witness the psychopathic side of actor James Norton, who plays the part of Sydney Chambers. My final suggestion for now is The Doctor Blake Mysteries which is set in Australia. There are currently three seasons on DVD, with more on the way. Happy viewing! -- Debbie, Library Clerk
