The Noir Effect

November 13, 2016 at 7:00 PM

“Hey, Mom, can you bring home The Maltese Falcon?”  My Generation Y son has recently become a fan of film noir. He’s watched Laura, Strangers on a Train, and The Wrong Man, and has been doing some research on the genre. Christie Hoerneman, in an article that I found really interesting, describes film noir as “a certain set of Hollywood films that were saturated with a darkness and cynicism that was not seen before.” I love how these films make my son curious about the culture and events of the 1940s and give him a new way to connect with his grandfather who grew up watching these movies. We were so excited when we discovered that the Dryden Theatre is screening nine examples of film noir during The Noir Effect event in November and December! We can’t wait to see film noir on the big screen, but in the meantime, we’ll keep checking out the library’s awesome collection of DVDs. --Vicki Rusinko, Library Clerk
