Free Tax Help at HPL!

March 24, 2014 at 12:54 PM

Need help preparing or filing your income tax returns? A representative of the New York State Tax Department will be available at the library on Saturday, March 29 from 12-4 pm and Monday, March 31 from 5-9 pm to provide free help with your New York State AND federal tax returns! You'll need to register for a one-hour appointment to take advantage of this opportunity to file your federal and NYS income tax returns online at no cost.  To register, call the library at 359-7092 or register online at http://www.libraryinsight.com/calendar.asp?jx=gz .

Free filing does have an income limit of $58,000, and there are a few income tax credits that are not eligible for electronic filing. The NYS Tax Department representative will provide a laptop, printer, and wireless card for taxpayers' use.

The goal of this NYS Tax Department outreach is to reach taxpayers who qualify for free filing, help them understand the ease and efficiency of e-filing, and save them the money they would pay a preparer.

You will need to bring a copy of last year’s tax return; picture ID (driver’s license); proof of income (Forms W-2, 1098, 1099 and any other documents showing additional income); information related to any credits that you are claiming; bank account and routing numbers (for direct deposit of your refund); social security card (or ITIN) for you, your spouse, and dependents. Be sure to bring your card – the number alone is not enough.
