I'm Melting!

Summer has arrived at the Henrietta Public Library with steamy heat, thunderstorms and bright sunshine all in one day!! With the not so good weather, hundreds of people are coming in to take out DVDs, videos, and audio books to listen and watch. With the hot days come hot cars; here are a few pointers to remember when borrowing media from the library:

  1. This video will melt if left in a hot car DVDs, videos and audio books are made of plastic. Be very careful not to leave these items in the car for extended periods of time. It doesn’t take long for a car to heat up to temperatures well over 100 degrees. Take the audio books into work for the day after your commute. Heat will warp the vinyl cases also.
  2. At home do not leave these items in direct sunlight or near the splashes of the pool. Water with chlorine may do damage to the compact disc’s surface.
  3. DVDs and compact discs are not indestructible. Please do not use them as Frisbees! Many of our patrons complain that our DVDs do not play or even load in their DVD player. Please let us know if there is a problem with the DVDs especially. Unfortunately, DVDs will not play well or load at all in some DVD players or personal computers. Many of the DVDs patrons reported did not play in their players work fine in our player at the library. We check many of these daily; it’s simply the nature of the DVD technology. We recently came across a website by way of Google at: www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html called “DVDs Demystified” which offers interesting tidbits about DVDs and the problems they exhibit. There are reasons that new special editions of DVDs come out every once in awhile.
  4. Magnetic tape in audiocassettes and videocassettes is also very vulnerable to extremes in temperature. Remember this next winter also; extreme cold can damage tapes too!

Thank you in advance for enjoying our audio-visual collection. We hope you will respect our media especially in the hot months ahead. Stay cool and safe over the July 4th “weekend” and come visit the Henrietta Public Library often!
