New Movies Made from Children’s Books
It’s been a few years since I wrote about movies made from children’s books; here are some that have been produced recently. They are either in movie theatres now, in HPL’s collection, or due to be released as a DVD soon. It’s interesting to compare the movie to the book, to see what changes have been made.
Angelina Ballerina Follows Her Dreams
Based on the popular series by Katherine Holabird about the mouse who loves to dance. One of the voices is Judi Dench! In HPL’s collection.
Arnie the Doughnut (book by Laurie Keller)
Arnie is shocked to learn that he is going to be eaten, and tries to come up with reasons Mr. Bing should keep him as a pet. In HPL’s collection.
Diary of a Spider (book by Doreen Cronin)
A humorous look at the life of a spider, told through his diary entries. The DVD will be released on May 27, just in time for our summer reading theme, “Catch the Reading Bug.”
Dooby Dooby Moo (book also by Doreen Cronin)
Farmer Brown’s animals (we first met them in Click Clack Moo) enter a talent show, hoping to win a trampoline! In HPL’s collection.
Eragon (book by Christopher Paolini)
Eragon, a poor farm boy, finds a magical blue stone which hatches into a dragon. As the last of the Dragon Riders, he fights in the battle between good and evil. In HPL’s collection.
Horton Hears a Who
Dr. Seuss’s well-known elephant tries to protect the tiny creatures living on a speck of dust. In theaters now.
Nim’s Island (book by Wendy Orr)
This is a tropical adventure involving a girl whose father is missing, and a children’s book author who is e-mailing her. (A sequel, Nim at Sea, has just been published.) In theaters now, starring Abigail Breslin and Jodie Foster.
The Spiderwick Chronicles (books by Tony DiTerlizzi)
The Field Guide is the first in this series about 3 ordinary children transported into a world of elves, goblins and trolls. Will be available on DVD June 24.
Happy watching and reading!
